Honoring Rags and his unique talents as an Illustrator, it seemed obvious to us that we pay homage to his long-standing nickname, Rags. Carrying on his name, the story of Rags endures with his superb drawings as the inspiration for wearable style.

His story, as told by his family – A remembrance of the man we loved.

The art included on this website spans the years 1941 to 2007. Taken as a whole, it is a study in discipline and demonstrates what Rags always referred to as “Loose as a Goose Art.”

Leo “Rags” Lathouwers had an unshakeable commitment to developing his artistic craft.

In addition to being a devoted husband and our father, Rags tirelessly applied himself to his remarkable artistic endeavors.

As time passed, he created a unique look that became his signature style. An extremely gifted and creative natural talent emerged and is proven by his many achievements over the course of his life. When he died, he left behind sixty years of artwork made without the benefit of any formal schooling or training. He was entirely self-taught, and we find that impressive considering his superb level of skill.

Rock the Art Wearable Commemorations

It all began with one question.
What should be done with our father’s art now that he’s gone?
Rags entrusted the fate of his art to his sons after his death. In 2007, a document written in his own hand was handed to us by our mother, Shirl.

He had four suggestions we could choose from.

Number four left us dumbfounded because it required trashing his artwork and pretending it never existed. Numbers one and two just didn’t hit the mark. But number three appealed to us, and we have come up with some great ideas for sharing his talent with you.

Being his kids, we’re creative too. Rather than framing and selling the art to put up on a wall, perhaps enjoyed by a few but not seen by many, we’ve crafted more adventurous plans. We are spreading his vision to as many people as possible.

Of course, we also hope to ‘make a nickel’ as he would have said. Stand by! We’ve got some great ideas cooking!”    Lee and Cary Lathouwers
